How to do push ups

Wondering how to do push ups? There’s no question that one of the best exercises that you can do to target your entire upper body is the push up. Putting together a great push-up workout is going to help to target your chest, triceps, core, as well as the biceps and shoulders to a small extent as they come into play and help execute the movement pattern.

Plus, another great thing about including the push up exercise into your workout program is that they can virtually be done anywhere, so require no equipment at all. And, with all the various push up variations that you can add into your workout session, there’s no chance that you’ll ever hit a plateau with this movement.

Let’s take the time right now though to walk you through how to do push ups so that you can ensure you see the best results possible from the movement.

Choose Your Balance Point

The very first thing to do when learning how to do push ups is determine what your balance point will be. For the more advanced version, you’ll want to place the feet on the ground with the legs extended. If this is too difficult for you, then you can place the knees on the ground to make things easier.

Reducing the lever length by doing this reduces the stress on the muscle, thus you’ll be able to execute the push-ups without struggling.

Keep Your Core Strong

The next important point to know about how to do push ups is to make sure your core stays strong at all times. If you ever let your middle start to sway, this is indication that you’ve just moved out of proper form with your push up and need to rest before starting again.

Think of squeezing the abs through the entire push up work out and you shouldn’t develop this problem.

Lower Downwards In A Controlled Fashion

After getting into the starting position, then you are to slowly lower the body down to the ground, coming as close down as possible without letting yourself drop. Try and get the nose to touch the ground if you can, but at the same time don’t strain your neck to do this. The body should maintain the flat position at all times.

Once you’re at the bottom of the push up, pause for a brief second to increase the intensity and work those muscles harder.

Press Straight Back Up

Finally, to complete the push up, press directly back up until the elbows are extended but not locked, making sure to do this in a smooth and controlled fashion as well.

If you want to work on your speed and power capabilities, try and do the push up portion rather quickly, while if you want to work on maximum strength and muscle tension, do it over a count of two or three.

So there you have the main points to know about how to do push ups. If you can add a few varieties into your push up work out, you can be guaranteed to get great results from them.
